My Struggle with Acne, and my solution for clear healthy skin!

As someone who struggled for years and years with acne, I know how frustrating the process can be.  After trying to clear my skin on my own with countless drugstore products and even a few infomercial purchases, I FINALLY decided it was time to seek out an expert opinion. I was embarrassed to reach out  for help. The idea of having anyone see me without a thick layer of makeup made me cringe. Turns out, scheduling that appointment was one of the wisest decisions I’ve ever made. Not only did the recommended combination of  prescriptions, products and treatments alleviate my existing acne, they’ve kept my skin clear and healthy for over eight years now. The best advice I can offer is, DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP!    ...

Day 16 – Slimming Formula

Day 16 – Slimming Formula

Day 16 I’ve officially survived my two week cleanse… It was difficult at times but I stuck with it, and the scale is reading 3 pounds lighter. I’m feeling on top of the world! On to part two; my first day of the ” Slimming Formula”. Not going to lie… the chalky texture is unpleasant but the taste is fruity. I don’t even have the urge to add any additional flavor drops to it. I chug all 8 ounces down quickly and give myself a moment to digest. My stomach is calm, not upset by the ice cold drink. I feel a sense of relief that I’ll only have to perform the ritual once daily, rather than repeat in the evening as I did for the cleanse. Now, time for breakfast. Piece of cake! (Not literally...

Day 1 – GliSODin Advanced Cleanse

Day 1 – GliSODin Advanced Cleanse

So many of my friends have tried cleanses and sworn by the benefits of them. I’ve never given it a go but with the latest offering right on my doorstep, GliSODin Advanced Cleanse, I figured why not? Day 1 I’m thinking that maybe Monday morning isn’t the best day to start a cleanse… then again, considering the weekend I just had, I REALLY need it. Instructions say to mix package one and two together in my shaker bottle……Step one white mixture and Step two brown mixture. I’ve added 1 cup of water from the water cooler and have proceeded to shake it up. This is the first cleanse I’ve tried and I’m slightly dreading it. I feel my face pinch up before I’ve even taken the first sip. I’m shocked to find the taste is mild ( only faintly leaving an aftertaste of berries and leaves ). I haven’t followed the recommendation of mixing it in with a fruit smoothie but could see how that trick would mask the taste entirely. Hopefully the evening shakes goes down as easily! Get yours here!...

What can I do to fight both acne and aging?

What can I do to fight both acne and aging?

QUESTION It’s frustrating to have to combat breakouts at the same time my skin is aging.   I find that every time I use a product that is supposed to fight aging such as wrinkles and large pores, I end up breaking out. When I try to focus on my acne and use a product that claims to stop breakouts, my skin ends up looking dry and even more wrinkled. What can I do to fight both acne and aging? ANSWER Adult acne has been a thorn in my own side for year so I feel your pain! Luckily, after finding the products, prescriptions and treatments that work for me, I finally have things under control. To get an expert opinion on the challenges of fighting acne and aging at the same time, I sat down with Medical Aesthetician Crystal Waugh.   The first step I would recommend is booking a complimentary consultation with  a medical aesthetician where we can assess her skin in person and  create a skincare plan and program that would best suit her needs.  We would start her off with a skincare program consisting of AHA’s and/or BHA’s, and possible topical and/or oral prescriptions, followed by a treatment plan which may include a combination of microdermabrasion, chemical peels, Isolaz, and laser treatments.   Acne is one of the biggest skin concerns today, besides anti-aging, and is a skin condition that can be maintained with proper skincare and treatments.  At Skin MediSpa we develop a regimen that is client specific, while monitoring the treatment plan and progress along the way with complimentary follow up visits.  Sun exposure is the number 1 cause of aging, so a Vitamin C serum along with a light-weight SPF will help prevent future damage, while laser treatments can help improve skin’s quality in terms of colour, elasticity and wrinkle reduction immediately.  It is possible to focus on breakouts and anti-aging at the same time, we just need to find the right plan for your specific skin....

Summer SKIN Sins

Summer SKIN Sins

Our routines in the summer tend to slack.. and who could blame us? The sun is shining, the days are longer, the nights… wilder. These summertime sins can wreak havoc on your skin and leave you looking a little worse for wear. Pledge to not commit any of these major no-no’s and your skin will be singing your praises come September!   Over-Waxed Frequent waxing can is hard on your skin and can result in redness and unappealing bumps. I said goodbye to my wax pot ages ago and have since moved on to laser hair removal. Smooth skin and no effort on my part? Yes please!   Dirty Shades Keep your sunglasses clean! Wipe your shades down between excursions. Makeup and sunscreen can quickly build up and cause irritation and breakouts around your nose.   Sleeping Beauty Late nights make it hard to keep up the routine of washing your face before bedtime. Sleeping with your makeup on can lead to clogged pores and acne. Keep cleansing pads near your bed to help squash the urge to sleep dolled up. My choice? ZO TE Pads have saved my skin too many times to count!           Over-Salted With all the parties and BBQs happening, pay close attention to your salt intake. Excess sodium literally sucks the moisture out of skin and can leave it looking dehydrated and dull. Opt for some veggies and invest in a hydrating facial moisturizer. Find the right one for...

Is there anything I can do to help prevent chin or jaw line pimples?

Is there anything I can do to help prevent chin or jaw line pimples?

QUESTION My skin is generally pretty clear but from time to time I get a spot either on my chin or jaw line with pimples?  They tend to start as a painful bump and turn into a full blown pimple.  Is there anything I can do to help when this happens or to help prevent these from happening? ANSWER Keeping your skin clear ( especially during the hot and humid summer months) can be a constant battle. We could all use a few pointers.  To get the scoop, I consulted  SKIN’s Medical Aesthetics Manager, Donna Lamarche. Donna has been with SKIN  MediSpa since they first opened their doors and has treated just about every skin condition out there! ” With ongoing advancements in skin care products, it’s possible to significantly improve mild to moderate acne  simply by using a skin care regimen with active, medical-grade ingredients.  I recommend using a cleanser with  salicylic or glycolic acid to wash off dead skin cells and excess oils and purify the skin.  The next step should be toner followed by a lotion or serum with anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.  A Vitamin C serum applied in the morning gives skin a brightening and rejuvenating boost, and helps to combat the daily exposure to oxidants, stressors and pollutants.  Finally, a light weight, oil- free sunscreen to protect from UV and to keep your skin hydrated should be considered. For extra protection, changing your pillowcase on  a daily  basis will help prevent the build up of sweat and dirt your skin is exposed to overnight.” What do we recommend for...

What age could you start laser hair treatment?

What age could you start laser hair treatment?

QUESTION What age could you start laser hair treatment? My daughter is almost 13 and she is very concerned about the hair on her legs. I do not want to shave. She has been using the NoNo for 2 years but without success. Thank you for your time. ANSWER Great question! To find your answer I went straight to our Registered Nurse Manager, Leigh Ann Morris. She’s spent the past 8 years providing SKIN’s clients with the high quality of care and outstanding treatment results that make SKIN MediSpa the gold standard in the aesthetic industry.   “While there is not necessarily an age restriction associated with laser hair removal, a  majority of those pursuing treatment tend to be older.  The reason for this is there is still some discomfort associated with the laser, and at such a young age, your daughter may find it difficult to sit through an entire treatment of her legs.    In order to achieve the most comfortable and effective treatment possible, she would still be asked to shave at least 24 hours prior to the procedure. This step can’t be skipped. In order to achieve reduction, the laser’s energy must be applied to each hair follicle. When hair growth is present on the skin’s surface, the laser’s energy is wasted targeting the visible hair, rather than the follicle itself.   While I’m not familiar with the NoNo technology myself, at home hair removal systems are limited in what they can offer as they’re available to the general public. If you’re looking for safe and effective results, it’s always best to seek treatment through an office that has a physician consultant on staff. That way you’re sure your daughter receives the best outcome possible.”...

Warning!

Warning!

As a Northerner I spend what seems like a solid 7 months waiting for the summer sun to finally appear…and yet when it finally arrives, it always seems to catch me off guard!   This past weekend I stopped in at my uncle’s house to wish him a happy birthday and have a quick chat. We opted to take advantage of the gorgeous weather and sit outside on the patio. I was so focused on enjoying my slice of lemon cream crumble ( YUM), that I didn’t even notice the warning tingles in my forearms. Sure enough, by the time I got up to leave, my pale arms had been marred with awkward looking flaming red rectangles that no amount of aloe vera could sooth.   You would think that working in the aesthetics industry for years would have instilled  the fact that the sun’s rays are incredibly strong and can wreak havoc quickly even on the cloudiest of days. Apparently not.   Now , I’m forced to do damage control with sunless tanner and hope that I don’t start peeling like a snake.   Wish me...
